The club has been active since 1968 and has been involved in local and international projects which includes work towards the eradication of Polio throughout the world through the Rotary Foundation project called PolioPLUS; providing disaster relief housing through the Rotary International project, ShelterBox; supporting the Sacred Heart Mission's meals program in St Kilda, and even building a children's playground on the St Kilda foreshore.
Rotary is a dynamic organisation that through the power of a group manages to achieve a huge amount. The club is apolitical and non-religious, which allows it to gain access to communities and countries where other organisations often find barriers to entry. A good example of this is Myanmar (Burma) in 2008. Rotary International was one of the first organisations that entered the country to distribute ShelterBox's after the devastation wrought by Cyclone Nargis.
Rotary International also holds positions on a number of UN agencies including African Union, Council of Europe, UNESCO, United Nations Headquarters, World Bank and the World Food Programme.
Through the Relish project, the Rotary Club of St Kilda now has a new lease on life, and an avenue to motivate real change in our local and international community. If you are interested in being part of this exciting development please feel free to contact us for more information.
